The challenges of a significant digital divide have become starker as Covid 19 has forced students into a remote learning environment. According to a 2018 census research study, nearly 1 out of 4 residents of San Antonio lack internet access.
Students without internet access are at a distinct disadvantage as it relates to continuing their education during the health crisis. This challenge has rallied business and non-profit partnerships into action, working on expanding access to the internet with a variety of creative solutions.
The YMCA of San Antonio and Bridgehead IT have partnered together to help bridge this digital divide. Bridgehead IT has donated and installed wireless access points at local YMCA locations. These wireless access points will provide high-speed internet access to students in and around the YMCA parking lot.
Wi-Fi is now available at the YMCA Westside and YMCA Davis Scott locations with the potential for additional locations to be added soon.
