When Generosity Travels Down the Amazon River
A Bridgehead Donation Turned Into Medical Care, Clean Water, and Hope
Back in April, Bridgehead IT proudly supported Medical Missions International (MMI) through a charity golf tournament sponsorship.
Like many charitable contributions, the donation was made with the simple goal of helping a worthwhile cause.
What happened next was extraordinary.
That support helped make possible a medical mission deep in the Amazon River region, bringing healthcare, clean water, and hope to remote communities in Colombia and Peru where regular access to medical services is often unavailable.
For Bridgehead Technical Account Manager Jason Lopez and his wife, the experience became deeply personal when they joined the mission team firsthand.
They weren't just supporting the mission anymore.
They became part of it.
A Floating Medical Clinic on the Amazon
The journey began in Leticia, Colombia, where a team of doctors, dentists, healthcare professionals, and volunteers boarded a floating medical clinic designed to reach communities scattered along the Amazon River.
Each day, the team traveled to multiple villages, some located across the border in Peru, providing healthcare services to people who otherwise might go months—or years—without medical attention.
The mobile clinic was staffed by a team of 35 volunteers, including:
- Three dentists
- One optometrist
- Two general practice physicians
- One physician's assistant
- Support volunteers serving wherever help was needed
Together, the team transformed a boat into a lifeline.
You Don't Need a Medical Degree to Make a Difference
One of the most inspiring parts of Jason's story is that not every volunteer arrived with medical experience.
His wife stepped into the role of dental assistant for the first time.
Jason found himself running the pharmacy.
Neither assignment was something they had trained for professionally.
Yet that is the reality of service work. People step forward, learn quickly, and do whatever is needed to help others.
By the end of the trip, the team had served just under 500 people.
Five hundred lives touched because people were willing to raise their hands and help.
Healthcare Was Only the Beginning
The work didn't stop when the clinic closed each day.
After treating patients, volunteers focused on another critical challenge facing many of the communities they visited: reliable access to clean water.
The team installed rainwater collection systems designed to capture and filter rainwater for local families. The systems use storage tanks, PVC piping, and filtration components to provide communities with a dependable source of clean water.
For some families, this represented their first reliable access to safe drinking water.
It's difficult to overstate the impact of something so simple.
Clean water improves health outcomes, increases quality of life, and creates opportunities for communities to thrive.
The Extra Mile Through the Jungle
Some communities were especially challenging to reach.
One required a trek nearly two miles through the Amazon jungle, followed by another mile in small motorized boats known locally as peque-peques.
By the time the team finished their work and began the return trip, darkness had settled over the river.
It was a reminder that meaningful service is not always easy.
The people who benefit from these missions often live far beyond the reach of traditional infrastructure and healthcare systems.
Reaching them takes commitment, teamwork, and determination.
What Giving Back Really Looks Like
At Bridgehead, we spend our days helping organizations solve technology challenges.
But moments like this remind us that our impact doesn't stop at business outcomes.

It becomes healthcare for a child.
